In October 2012 I flew to Uruguay to join expedition sailing yacht, Pelagic as skipper. Pelagic has been having her winter refit in Piriapolis at the entrance of the River Plate.
Pelagic is Skip Novak's original 16.5metre custom concept built in 1987 to explore the island South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula and Tierra del Fuego. All these regions she still visits today and has proven herself as the perfect vessel for the exploring these regions. Built from steel she is able to cope with ice comfortably and is easily able to navigate the notorious southern oceans.
Pelagic has a lifting keel which allows her to enter shallow bays to find a protected anchorage safe from drift ice, it also allows her to dry out completely as the photo below shows.
